In the wake of Hamas's October 7th massacre of over 1,400 Israelis, student groups like Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) across the country have condoned terrorism and violence, glorifying Hamas's atrocities. These groups are also voicing an increasingly radical call for “dismantling” Zionism, which is a fundamental component of Jewish identity. This kind of rhetoric is dangerous and increasingly risks creating a hostile environment for Jewish and Israeli students on campus.
University-sanctioned and funded organizations must adhere to certain rules, including codes of conduct to ensure that campuses are safe for all students. While speech, including hate speech, is protected, assault, intimidation, and harassment are not.
Every student has the right to feel safe on campus and express themselves regardless of their identity. Join ADL in urging San Diego State University of Michigan to investigate whether anti-Israel and anti-Zionist student groups that are glorifying terrorist attacks against civilians and attacking Zionism may be violating student codes of conduct or other relevant policies on campus.
