Anger over the Israel-Hamas conflict can seep into American society in the form of antisemitic harassment, assault, and vandalism. No one should fear for their safety because of their faith. President Biden has called on Congress to provide emergency funding to help ensure community spaces have the resources they need to keep people safe from hate.
The Nonprofit Security Grant Program was created to help houses of worship, community centers, and nonprofits improve their security. They can use these grants to install security cameras, reinforce steel doors, and learn how to prepare for emergencies. Despite the Department of Homeland Security issuing warnings of potential violence by extremists, the problem is that there isn’t enough grant funding available to meet the needs of every community. In October President Biden requested emergency funding from Congress to increase security grants. Since Israel was attacked, the U.S. has experienced a dramatic surge in antisemitism and Congress still has not yet passed emergency funding to protect our communities.
