The internet was supposed to be a space for ideas and collaboration, but these days, more people are encountering hate and harassment online than ever before – especially on Facebook. There are very few safe online spaces for people to express themselves without the threat of harassment targeting their faith, identity, sexual orientation, or race. According to the ADL Center for Technology and Society’s latest report, more than half of American teens and adults have reported experiencing harassment online. From cell phone numbers and home addresses being posted online to hate-fueled death threats, virtual harassment is having a negative impact on the mental health and safety of users. Tech companies must do more to protect us from hate.
According to the new ADL report, most online harassment occurs on Facebook. Meta continues to allow hateful content to flow unchecked on Facebook and Instagram because it’s good for profits, even if it’s antisemitic, racist, or homophobic. ADL is calling on Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg to prioritize the safety of online citizens. There are simple steps that Zuckerberg can take to put people over profits and ensure we are all safe from hate. We need your help urging Mark Zuckerberg to enforce and improve Facebook and Instagram’s safety policies, properly resource safety teams, and be transparent about how the platforms address hate and harassment.
