According to federal intelligence and law enforcement agencies, domestic terrorism is a significant threat to national security - most notably, white supremacist terrorists. From a Buffalo supermarket to the Tree of Life synagogue, innocent Americans are being killed in the name of white supremacy.
These threats are unlikely to subside soon. Recruitment to white supremacist causes is at an all-time high. According to recent research by ADL’s Center on Extremism, there has been an almost 40% increase in white supremacist propaganda in 2022 compared to the year before. These activities help recruit more extremists and can be the stepstones to increasingly violent activity. Congress must act now to make sure law enforcement agencies are prepared.
The Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act seeks to address the growing threat of white supremacists and other violent domestic extremists. It will ensure that offices in the federal government that are identifying, analyzing, investigating, and prosecuting domestic terrorism are codified into law - so they cannot be dismantled on a whim. This bill would give federal agencies dedicated structures to improve their ability to address domestic terrorism and also put in place important oversight restrictions to ensure they are using resources to address violent threats.
